Before you decide to adopt a dachshund, ensure that this is the right breed for you, your family and your life-style. If you've never owned a dachshund, read the information on our Dachshund Information page. You can also download our brochure on selecting the right breed for you, when living in a city: Breed Selection Guide/Checklist
REQUIREMENTS:
Age of Applicant: You must be 19 years of age to enter into a legal contract in the State of Nebraska. Although the application is not a contract, it is a request to enter into a contract of adoption with Husker's Hope Dachshund Rescue. Applicants must be 21 years of age in any state, unless co-signed by a responsible adult over the age of 21.
Securely Fenced Yard: As a rule, most dachshunds should have a securely fenced yard. The exception to that rule is judged entirely on the temperament and habits of the individual dog. As dachshunds are smaller, some make very good apartment pets. But, in this case, you must have a good plan for exercise, potty breaks, and socialization activities that you will provide for your dachshund.
References and Home Inspection: All applications must have at least 3 references, the first being your veterinarian of record; followed by 2 persons that know you and your history as a pet owner. A 4th reference is required for those applicants that rent/lease their home/apartment.
Adoption Fees: The adoption fee starts at $250. This fee must be paid in full at the time you enter into a contract for adoption. The fees cover the basic costs of care. Anything extra is held in a trust, by Husker's Hope Dachshund Rescue, to be used, as needed, in the cost, care and processes associated with rescuing, rehabilitating and saving displaced dachshunds.
Adopting a Special Needs Dachshund: In addition to the basic needs of a dachshund, a Special Needs pup will require a set up which is designed for their special needs. There is no exception for this. For example, if you desire to adopt a pup who is recovering or recovered from IVDD surgery/rehabilitation, you will be required to have safety ramps in all areas of elevation up/down, in their path.
You will also need to understand that every dachshund has the potential of becoming a special needs dog, which would require that you understand the costs and care associated with the potention. This risk doubles with a pup in recovery state.
